However with my WRT160N v3 router, upon trying to upgrade, I am stuck in the Management Console webgui page. I followed the directions here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_WRT150N_%26_WRT160N#WRT160Nv3_Instructions 1) I did the 30/30/30 hard reset 2) Went to 192.168.1.1 in Internet Explorer and saw 'management console' screen 3) Tried to upgrade the firmware: ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/V24-K26/svn13575/dd-wrt.v24-13575_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_wrt160nv3.bin 4) In Internet Explorer, the progress bar goes to around 75% and then times out 5) I do a hard power cycle (unplug router, wait 30 seconds, and replug) 6) I see the 'management console' screen again instead of the DD-WRT management console screen. I try another hard power cycle and I still am on the 'management console' page. I tried a 30/30/30 reset and same result. I am UNABLE to upgrade to DD-WRT and am STUCK on 'management console' webgui page!
Curious observations: 1) If my PC has automatic DHCP and is hard-wired to the router and nothing else is connected to the router, the PC is unable to get an IP address and gets 0.0.0.0 with no default gateway. I double checked this with another PC and got the same results. 2) If I assign a static IP such as 192.168.1.100, the PC is able to connect to the router with a default gateway of 192.168.1.1 3) When pinging the router with the PC having a static IP of 192.168.1.100, I get a TTL of 100, which according to docs means that the router is awaiting new firmware. However 'management console' times out whenever I try to upgrade 4) I tried the TFTP2 method. I continuously pinged the router, and just when powering on and getting the first TTL of 100, I try to upgrade the firmware with 99 retries, and no success in upgrading the firmware. 5) Whenever trying to upgrade the firmware via the 'management console' webpage gui, after timing out, the PC is unable to find 192.168.1.1 unless the router is powered off by either a hard power cycle or 30/30/30 reset. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't think I bricked the router because I have a ping with TTLs of 100 and am able to browse to the 'management console' screen. However, the 'management console' screen times out and I am not able to get the TFTP2 method working. Any suggestions? I am pulling out my hair and have had 2 hours of sleep. Please help! Thanks in advance. |

You can ping the router.. using the management screen, flash the STOCK LINKSYS firmware for your router. remember to wait after the successful flash (5+ minutes). then install dd-wrt again. clear your browsers cache & cookies 1st. make sure you have no firewall or av software blocking anything. Some other browsers have been reported to have problems. dunno which ones atm. I use IE _________________ [Moderator Deleted] |

I disabled the Windows Firewall and NOD32 antivirus. I tried to upload the above-mentioned STOCK firmware via Internet Explorer v8, Firefox v3.5, and Chrome, but I had the same negative result, even after clearing all of the cache/history. I assigned a static IP to my PC (192.168.1.100) and browsed to 192.168.1.1 to see the 'Management Console' page. I then uploaded the STOCK firmware, which was uploaded in less than 10 seconds, but then in all of the browsers, it says 'Waiting for 192.168.1.100' and times out to a 404 page after 1-2 minutes. During this upload process, I am able to successfully ping the router and get TTL=100. After the timeout, I am unable to ping the router (192.168.1.1) and I get 'Hardware Not Found' error. After the timeout, I powered off the router for five minutes, and then turn it on, and got the same 'Management Console' page. I tried repeating the above steps in the previous paragraph and I get the same negative results. I am stuck in an infinite loop. Can you please help and advise on how to properly upload the STOCK firmware into the 'Management Console' page without timing out? |

That is the correct firmware. you are doing it wrong.. you are not waiting long enough. after it sucessfully flashes, now wait for 5+ minutes. do not worry about the browser loosing connection or the pings stop. This router takes a LONG TIME to flash & boot. It will boot 3 times when flashing if nvram is clear. I believe it takes a long time because this device has an 8 bit data buss. I don't know where the waiting for 192.168.1.100 is coming from on your browser. when you flash here is what happens and this device takes the longest out of all the routers I have worked on.. bin file gets loaded to ram of the router it gets checked to make sure the data is not corrupt it then gets written to flash (this is the part that takes a long time with this router) it gets checked again the program (firmware) starts and the router reboots nvram partition is formatted and nvram variables are written, the router reboots again so it can load the nvram variables. the router will reboot one more time. you will lose the ping responces between the steps the router is performing. so.. flash wait no less than 5+ minutes i'll bet that the router will boot on its own at around the 5 ~ 6 minute mark after this flash power cycle _________________ [Moderator Deleted] |

I followed your instructions, and I am still in the ever-perpetual Management Console page. 1) I set the IP address of the connected PC to have an IP of 192.168.1.100, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway of 192.168.1.1, and Preferred DNS server of 192.168.1.1. 2) I flashed the STOCK firmware via the Management Console page. The status bar reached 100% in both Internet Explorer and Chrome when uploading the flash file. 3) I waited 10 minutes for the flash file to be installed on the router. The status bar in the browser said 'Waiting for 192.168.1.1' as shown in the attachments. 4) Then I power cycled, but I still get the Management Console when it reboots. Pinging 192.168.1.1 shows a TTL of 100. 5) I repeated steps 1 through 4, and waited 24 hours instead of 10 minutes for the flash file to be installed on the router. But I still get the same Management Console result as described in step 4. Please advise!!! How can I flash my router properly?

I have no other ideas unless attempt the proper dd-wrt trailed build for the router. Kinda shooting in the dark without a serial output to see what is going on. _________________ [Moderator Deleted] |

Check the tcp/ip settings in your computer, did you happen to set the default gateway to 192.168.1.100? Make sure that the only network connection you have is the cable between your router and your computer, no other network cables connected to the router or the computer and no wireless card enabled in the computer. _________________ Kernel panic: Aiee, killing interrupt handler! |

Ok, I'll upload the DD-WRT flash file tonight and post the results. Is this the right firmware for v3? Version: dd-wrt.v24-13309_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_wrt160nv3.bin Source: http://www.dd-wrt.com/routerdb/de/download/Linksys/WRT160N/3.0/dd-wrt.v24-13309_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_wrt160nv3.bin/2294 @barrware, what info do you need for the serial output? How can I get it to help troubleshoot? @LOM, sorry that was a typo. The default gateway is indeed 192.168.1.1. I checked the TCP/IP settings. The snapshot in the status bar confirms this too. So I don't think that's the issue. And no other computer was connected to the router when uploading the flash and the wireless radio was disabled/off. |

However the old router is still stuck in the ever perpetual Management Console page even with the above mentioned DD-WRT killer flash file. I am nearly giving up on this old router now...sigh. |
